Principal Consultant Erik Doernenburg That is how far I’ll travel to go to JAOO this year. And the return trip will be as long… I might be a little crazy but I simply didn’t want to miss JAOO in Aarhus just because I live in Sydney now.

This year is especially exciting for me because it is my first as a member of the programme committee, which means that I was able to invite some speakers whom I always wanted to see. On this list of speakers is Michele Lanza from the University of Lugano. Michele is going to talk about the beauty of code, which, looking at Therese’s entry below, seems to be a common interest this year. I’m also glad to have Michele at JAOO because his work is one example of the great practical research that is being done in academia.

The beauty of code is an interesting topic in itself but I have found that applying visualisation techniques to software, making the beauty (or the lack of it!) visible, has markedly increased the effectiveness with which I can understand new code bases. I hope you’ll find this topic as interesting as we do.
